Matlab latex has problem with fact latex command
MATLAB's TeX does not support those. However, these two will work:
gtext('$\frac{1}{2}$','interpreter','latex','fontsize',50)
gtext('$\sqrt{5}$','interpreter','latex','fontsize',50)
